Chris Lee Biography Brooklyn-based singer and pop auteur Chris Lee was born in Charlotte, North Carolina and raised as a high school quarterback, studied philosophy at UNC-Chapel Hill, was a DJ at WXYC, wrote music criticism for 'The Wire', 'Tuba Frenzy' and 'Spin', and played guitar in country and free jazz groups before bursting out in the late '90s under his own name, with his own voice. His debut album, Chris Lee (Misra, 2000), co-produced by Lee and Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, is a raw, brave and unique marriage of '60s-'70s soul music with '70-'80s punk and new wave. A warm critical reception and short tour of the midwest and southeast followed, but Lee was back in the studio by November to begin his sophomore album, Chris Lee Plays & Sings Torch'd Songs, Charivari Hymns & Oriki Blue-Marches. Since his debut solo performance in June of 1998, Lee has performed frequently in New York City and toured the US extensively both solo and with his band, as headliner and as support for acts such as Starsailor, Low, Kelly Hogan and Tanya Donelly. He has twice performed at South by Southwest, toured Europe, and appeared at the Sonic Youth-curated All Tomorrow's Parties festival at UCLA. Releases Chris Lee Plays & Sings Torch'd Songs, Charivari Hymns & Oriki Blue-Marches was again co-produced by Steve Shelley, who also lent his percussion skills to half the album's tracks. Recorded at Sonic Youth's Manhattan studios and at Easley-McCain in Memphis, the album mines a lower-key vibe, based primarily on acoustic guitar, upright bass, and Lee's remarkable throatwork. Highlights include "Lonesome Eyes", a shuffling anthem replete with 70s horns, "In Yellow Moonlight", which imagines Ali Farke Toure accompanying Nick Drake, and a daring cover of Neil Young's "On The Beach", featuring ace guitarist Smokey Hormel (Beck/Tom Waits).
