Biography

NYC's most enigmatic chanteuse, Chan Marshall a.k.a. Cat Power, broke out, back to the audience, circa 1993, announcing her arrival with a thoroughly gripping performance in support of Liz Phair. Soon after she drafted Two Dollar Guitar mates Tim Foljahn and Steve Shelley to back her up, and their union produced a handful of recordings, of which the raw, lyrical Myra Lee is perhaps the most mature statement.

Blessed with one of the most haunting instruments this side of Crystal Gayle - pipes that soar and scratch like mad eagles, and a chiming sui generis guitar style she should get more credit for, Chan takes hypnotic sonic journeys on which listeners feel blindly compelled to follow her, sometimes despite their better judgement, but often better off because of it.

A bona fide star in France, Miss Cat may just be the heir to the Brigitte Fontaine school of eccentric art-pop. Between world tours and mounting critical acclaim, the transplanted Atlantan seems to be moving at a lightspeed pace these days, both physically and artistically. Yet wherever she may end up, one can always return to Myra Lee, where it all started in its subtly brute glory.
